How India's Hotel Industry Can Halve Its Plastic Footprint by 2027

India's hotel industry generates roughly 55,000 tonnes of single use plastic waste every year. About 30 percent of that comes from in room and F and B water packaging alone. It is also the easiest line item for a general manager to fix without operational disruption or guest complaints.

The Business Case

Guests notice. TripAdvisor and Booking.com reviews from 2023 onwards regularly cite plastic waste as a negative. Corporate travel programmes at IT majors and consulting firms are increasingly ESG scored, and packaged water is on the sustainability audit checklist. Award programmes like the Earthcheck Certified Silver and the Green Key eco label require documented plastic reduction plans.

Financially the switch is not a cost centre. Biodegradable bottles carry a 15 to 25 percent premium over conventional PET, but hotels that make the switch typically eliminate the small in room 250 ml bottles entirely and standardise on 500 ml with better perceived value. Net supply cost usually comes out flat.

Five Practical Steps

  1. Audit current inventory. Count every plastic bottle, cup, and stirrer used across in room, banquet, F and B outlets, and staff pantry. Most hotels underestimate volume by 30 percent.
  2. Switch in room water to compostable bottles. The single highest volume item. A 250 room property using two 500 ml bottles per occupied night saves about 180,000 conventional bottles per year.
  3. Install glass dispensers at high volume F and B outlets. Buffet breakfast, banquet tea, and coffee stations. Zero packaging on the guest facing side.
  4. Custom label your biodegradable range. Hotel branded packaging is a positive marketing touchpoint. Same base bottle, wrapped with a hotel design that mentions the eco packaging story.
  5. Publish the numbers. Include the plastic reduction in your annual sustainability disclosure. Most hotel groups already file Global Reporting Initiative reports and this is a strong line item.

What Guests Actually Care About

Willingness to pay research from the Bombay chapter of the Federation of Hotel and Restaurant Associations of India (FHRAI 2024) shows 71 percent of business travellers and 62 percent of leisure travellers factor visible sustainability practices into repeat booking decisions. In room bottled water is the most visible touchpoint of all.
