🌱 100% Plant-Derived · Certified Compostable

PLA Water Bottles
Made in India

Green ORA Water manufactures water bottles from food-grade PLA (polylactic acid) bioresin. derived entirely from fermented plant sugars, certified compostable to IS/ISO 17088, and free of microplastic residue. The same clarity and strength as conventional PET, without the fossil-fuel supply chain.

What is PLA

Polylactic Acid, Explained Simply

PLA is a polyester made from lactic acid, which in turn is produced by fermenting plant sugars. corn starch, sugarcane, or cassava. It is the most widely produced compostable bioplastic in the world today and the only one currently available at the scale, price point, and clarity required for retail water bottling.

Unlike conventional PET, which is drilled from crude oil and persists in landfill for centuries, PLA is grown, harvested, and at end-of-life breaks down under industrial composting into only water, CO₂, and biomass. There are no microplastic fragments and no toxic residues.

Every batch of PLA resin we use is food-contact certified and compliant with IS/ISO 17088 for compostability. Independent migration testing confirms zero leaching into the water at storage temperatures up to 40 °C.

Material Advantages

Why We Chose PLA for Our Bottles

Of the six compostable bioplastics on the market, PLA is the only one that hits every requirement for premium bottled water in India.

💎

Crystal Clarity

PLA offers optical clarity comparable to PET, so the water inside looks pristine on hotel bedside tables and event bars, unlike the amber tint of PHA or the opacity of starch-based bioplastics.

🏭

Commercial Scale in India

PLA is the only compostable bioplastic available in India at the volume, consistency, and food-grade certification required for BIS/ISI-compliant water bottling today.

🌡️

Storage-Stable for Bottled Water

PLA remains dimensionally and chemically stable up to 40 °C, covering standard Indian warehouse, delivery-vehicle, and retail conditions without deforming or leaching.

🌱

Renewable Feedstock

Sourced from annually harvested plant sugars, not fossil crude. Our PLA supply chain captures atmospheric CO₂ during feedstock growth instead of releasing sequestered carbon.

🧪

Independent Certifications

IS/ISO 17088 for compostability, food-contact compliance under BIS and FSSAI, and third-party migration testing to confirm zero chemical leaching into the water.

♻️

Clean End-of-Life

Under industrial composting (58 °C ± 2 °C), our PLA bottles fully biodegrade within 180 days, returning to soil as water, CO₂, and biomass. no microplastic legacy.

Common Questions

PLA Water Bottle FAQ

Is PLA safe for drinking water?
Yes. The PLA grade we use is food-contact certified under BIS and FSSAI, and independent migration testing confirms zero leaching of any chemical compounds into the water at storage temperatures up to 40 °C. Our bottles also carry IS 14543 certification for packaged drinking water.
How is PLA different from ordinary plastic?
Conventional PET is derived from crude oil and persists in the environment for centuries, fragmenting into microplastics. PLA is derived from fermented plant sugars, is certified compostable, and breaks down entirely within 180 days under industrial composting into water, CO₂, and biomass. no microplastic fragments.
Do PLA bottles taste different?
No. PLA is an inert polymer with no discernible taste. Blind taste panels rate water from PLA bottles indistinguishable from the same water in glass. Unlike aged PET, PLA does not develop the plasticky note even after warehouse storage.
Can PLA bottles be refrigerated or frozen?
Yes. PLA is dimensionally and chemically stable at refrigeration temperatures (2–8 °C). We do not recommend freezing sealed PLA bottles because water expansion can stress any bottle. same guidance as for glass or PET.
What is the shelf life of PLA-bottled water?
Twelve months at ambient Indian storage conditions, matching the BIS shelf life for packaged drinking water. PLA does not accelerate water degradation.
What happens to a PLA bottle if it ends up in a normal landfill?
PLA is optimised for industrial composting, not landfill anaerobic conditions. In landfill it will degrade slowly. faster than PET but not within a defined timeframe. This is why we run bottle take-back programmes for our hotel and corporate clients and route collected bottles to certified industrial composters. See our composting guide for details.
