Landfill
PLA degrades slowly under landfill anaerobic conditions. faster than PET, but not within any defined timeframe. This is the worst-case outcome and the reason we operate a take-back scheme rather than assuming municipal disposal.
♻️ End-of-Life Handbook · For Hotels, Corporates & Consumers
A certified compostable bottle only delivers its environmental benefit if it actually reaches a composter. This guide explains what "industrial compostable" means in practice, how it differs from home composting, what happens when a PLA bottle ends up in the wrong bin, and how to set up a proper waste stream. no marketing spin.
The Core Distinction
Our PLA bottles are certified for industrial composting under IS/ISO 17088. Home composting works but takes considerably longer.
| Property | 🏭 Industrial Composting | 🏡 Home Composting |
|---|---|---|
| Temperature | 58 °C ± 2 °C sustained | 25–45 °C typical |
| Moisture | Actively controlled at 50–60% | Passive, variable |
| Certification | IS/ISO 17088 verifies performance at this spec | No equivalent Indian standard |
| Time to full breakdown | ~180 days | 12–24 months (rough estimate) |
| End products | Water, CO₂, biomass | Water, CO₂, biomass |
| Available in India | Growing network. municipal + private | Widely available (backyard, community) |
Reality Check
If a compostable PLA bottle ends up somewhere other than industrial composting, here is honestly what happens.
PLA degrades slowly under landfill anaerobic conditions. faster than PET, but not within any defined timeframe. This is the worst-case outcome and the reason we operate a take-back scheme rather than assuming municipal disposal.
PLA is a contaminant in a PET stream. It looks identical but has different melt behaviour and reduces the quality of the resulting rPET. Please do not bin PLA bottles with PET.
Under marine conditions PLA biodegrades within 2–5 years, versus 450+ years for PET. Vastly better than PET, but littering is still the wrong outcome. dispose responsibly regardless of material.
For Buyers
Practical playbook for hotels, corporate offices, event organisers and airlines using our PLA bottles at scale.
Provide a clearly labelled compostable-waste bin next to every location where guests or employees drink from PLA bottles. Colour-coded lids and bilingual signage help correct sorting.
PLA looks identical to PET. staff need to know why it belongs in a different stream. We provide a short training deck and printed collateral for any customer running the programme.
Empty PLA bottles can be crushed and stored in the compostable-waste stream just like other soft plastics. No special container is needed. just isolation from PET recycling and wet waste.
Either use our take-back collection service or route via a local certified industrial composter. Ahmedabad, Pune, Bengaluru and Delhi NCR all have active facilities today.
Track kilograms diverted per month. This becomes evidence for your ESG report, hotel sustainability certification, or corporate carbon disclosure.
Green ORA Programme
For any customer running a Green ORA PLA programme at 500+ bottles per month, we operate a bottle collection and composting routing service. Empty PLA bottles are collected from your site on a scheduled cycle, aggregated at our Ahmedabad hub, and routed to a certified industrial composter partner.
Each collection generates a compostable-waste manifest tied to your customer account, which you can cite in ESG reports or sustainability audits. this is the piece most bioplastic programmes leave out, and it is the piece that turns a marketing claim into a documented outcome.
