PHA and PLA: India's Most Promising Bioplastics Explained

Ask most consumers what a bioplastic is and you will get vague answers. Ask a packaging engineer and you will hear the acronyms PHA and PLA. Both are certified compostable, both are commercially available in India today, and each has distinct strengths for water bottling. This article breaks down when each is the right choice.

Polylactic Acid (PLA)

PLA is a polyester made from fermented plant sugars (typically corn starch or sugarcane). It is the most widely produced bioplastic globally, largely because NatureWorks scaled up production in the early 2000s with Cargill backing.

Strengths.

  • Clarity approaching that of PET, ideal for water bottles that need to show product quality.
  • Mature supply chain. Multiple Indian converters can process PLA on existing PET blow moulding equipment with minor tooling adjustments.
  • Certified compostable to IS ISO 17088. Breaks down to CO2, water, and biomass in 180 days in industrial composting.

Weaknesses.

  • Only industrially compostable. Home composting takes years. Landfill deposition breaks down slowly and can release methane.
  • Softens at 55 to 60 degrees Celsius. Cannot be used for hot fill applications like tea or coffee.
  • Barrier properties lower than PET. Shelf life of packaged water in PLA is typically 6 to 9 months versus 12 to 18 for PET.

Polyhydroxyalkanoate (PHA)

PHA is produced by bacteria that store the polymer as an energy reserve, similar to how humans store fat. Sugars are fed to specific bacterial strains and the polymer is harvested. This makes PHA fundamentally different from other bioplastics.

Strengths.

  • Home compostable AND marine biodegradable, certified TUV OK Compost HOME and OK Marine. Breaks down at ambient temperature in a backyard bin within a year, and in ocean water in months.
  • Excellent barrier properties. Better than PLA and approaching PET for oxygen and moisture ingress.
  • Handles temperatures up to 80 degrees Celsius, opening warm fill and pasteurisation applications.

Weaknesses.

  • Higher cost. Roughly 2x the price of PLA due to lower global production volume.
  • Clarity is lower. PHA bottles have a slight amber tint that some brands consider premium and others avoid.
  • Fewer Indian converters. Supply is currently import dependent from Danimer Scientific (US) or RWDC Industries (Singapore), though Praj Industries in Pune is commissioning India's first commercial PHA line in 2026.

Which One Should You Choose?

For a hotel or event brand that ships bottles into indoor use and has access to industrial composting, PLA is the pragmatic choice. Lower cost, clearer bottle, mature supply chain.

For a brand serving outdoor markets, festivals, coastal locations, or requiring true home compostability for a marketing claim, PHA earns its price premium.

Some brands (Green ORA included) use both. Our slim 300 ml and 600 ml retail range uses PLA. Our outdoor and event bottles use PHA. Buyers can choose which format matches their end use environment.
